Vesuvius, An Active Volcano in 1832, Italy, Poster
Posted By David Paul on at Dreamgifts
This poster features a reproduction of a vintage color plate showing Mt Vesuvius as an active volcano in 1832. The view is of the peak several miles from the crater, from the path behind the hermitage. A plume of smoke rises from the crater. Men on horseback and on foot are on the path in the foreground.
Mt Vesuvius, about 9 kilometres (5.6 miles) east of Naples, is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Since the eruption of 79 AD, Vesuvius has erupted many times with volcanic activity throughout the 17th Century onwards.
The year 1832 wasn't notable for major volcanic eruptions but as the print shows the volcano was active. The print is a reproduction of one of the plates in Sketches Of Vesuvius, With Short Accounts Of Its Principal Eruptions, published in Naples in 1832.
